FROM GLOBAL TO LOCAL
UNA chapters are made up of Americans who support the principles and vital work of the United Nations, working to strengthen the UN system, promote constructive United States leadership within it, and advance the goals of the United Nations Charter.
UNA-GCC has a rich history of advancing the mission of the United Nations through impactful local initiatives. In 2004, the chapter was reinvigorated under Gabrielle Buckley at the request of Edison Dick, whose mother was a founding member of the Chicago chapter. The Dick Family Foundation Grant, which continues to support the chapter annually, stems from this legacy. That same year, UNA-GCC hosted a powerful event on the AIDS pandemic featuring General Dallaire as the guest speaker, with UNICEF serving as an affiliate. The chapter also became a significant supporter of Model UN, providing sponsorship for students’ attire and helping implement the Global Classrooms program at the middle school level through the efforts of Roxxy Cooley and trainer Akvile Cosimo Monkute.
In 2006, the chapter organized “Silence the Violence,” a youth-led march initiated by Model UN Club students to raise funds for children affected by violence in both Darfur and Chicago. Two years later, in 2008, UNA-GCC hosted a private breakfast with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during his introductory visit to the United States, offering members a rare opportunity to engage directly with global leadership.
By 2010, the chapter responded swiftly to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, leading a fundraising effort that included a visit to Haiti coordinated by Erica Green and Jan Douglas. In 2011 and 2012, UNA-GCC launched the Global Wake-Up Film Festival at Columbia College, showcasing international films and culminating in an awards dinner and reception under the leadership of Claudia Jaccarino.
In 2013, the chapter facilitated a Post-MDG Consultation Workshop to engage the community in shaping the next phase of global development goals. That same year, it organized a Shot@Life panel discussion featuring Dr. Tan from Lurie Children’s Hospital, Dr. Cordes from Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, and Dr. LaVonne Downey of Roosevelt University, held at Oak Park’s West Suburban Hospital.
Today, UNA Chicago is a vibrant and active arm of the United Nations, deeply committed to advancing its mission and upholding the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through ongoing education, advocacy, and outreach, the chapter bridges global priorities with local action, empowering communities across Chicagoland to make meaningful contributions to a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world.
