Journey to Democracy- The Crisis of Sudan

Posted by unagcc on December 14, 2011

On December 1st, 2011, UNA-USA in collaboration with the Center for Global Peace through Commerce hosted an event titled 'Journey to Democracy- The Crisis of Sudan'. In the aftermath of the newly independent Republic of South Sudan, the event sought to highlight the challenges which many Southern Sudanese were forced to undergo, whilst comparing this to the lavish lifestyles of the Northern Sudanese. As such, the event was home to two guests.

The first speaker was born a Muslim in Northern Sudan. His lifestyle mirrored that of the wealth of many Arabs in the region and as such he was sheltered to the various forms of discrimination which took place in the country. On the contrary, the second speaker was born a Christian in Southern Sudan. At a young age he was forced to leave his village and his family under the fear of death and spent many years in hopes of security, eventually arriving in a refugee camp in Kenya. At the age of seventeen, twelve years after he was forced to flee his home, he arrived in the United States. To this day he has not been reunited with his family. The two experiences were very different, but created a united platform by which they both advocated for the continued support of Sudan, whilst speaking of the current social and economic challenges which the newly split nation continues to undergo. The event was a huge success and we believe the message was heard.

Thank you once again for all your support.
Regards,
Gabrielle Pryce
