National Conference for Land Mine Action, October 6 & 7, 2005, Chicago, Illinois

Sponsored by the Chicago Coalition for Landmine Action and the US Department of State, Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, this two day Conference will be held October 6-7 at Roosevelt University, Chicago-Kent College of Law and other locations all around Chicago. This exciting Conference will be launched by a series of special events to raise public awareness of landmines throughout the Chicago area including a major public event in downtown Chicago.

Anthony Lake, former National Security Advisor and President of the Marshall Legacy Institute will be the keynote speaker in the evening of 6 October. His address will be followed by a private dinner. The following day, October 7 will provide opportunities for practical workshops that include topics such as education, fundraising, networking/partnerships, public relations, media.

 

Volunteers are needed for the following task forces;

Dinners Task Force: arrange for dinners throughout Greater Chicago area; coordinate with participants, set up guidelines, arrange for transportation. Chair: Cheryl Hejnal Chejnal@aol.com

University Students Task Force: (Chairs: Denise Jorgens d-jorgens@uchicago.edu, Mara Salerno msalerno@mw.care.org) Tim Winkler tim_winkler2003@yahoo.com and Chris Bell BellChris@usa.redcross.org) Coordinate with student groups and faculty at local universities/high schools including: University of Chicago, Northwestern University, DePaul University, Loyola University, Columbia College, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northpark University, Northeastern University, Chicago-Kent College of Law, Global Classrooms program of the Chicago Public Schools, Evanston Township High School, Parker School, St. Scholastica, Lab School at the University of Chicago.

Events Task Force: (Chair: Kitty Kurth KurthLampe@aol.com Co-Chair Jacqueline Buckley JacquelineBuckley@sbcglobal.net.) Arrange for several public special events to be held in the downtown Chicago area (Daley Plaza). Coordinate with University students for special events on their campuses and in High Schools around Chicago. The Center for International Rehabilitation has offered to host an open house to demonstrate their Sand Casting System and wheelchair programs. Coordinate with the State Department and participating organizations for resources.

Media Relations Task Force: (Chair: Kitty Kurth KurthLampe@aol.com and Lisa Applegate vanapple99@yahoo.com. Arrange for interviews with Jerome McDonnell; Chicago Tribune/Chicago Sun Times Editorial Boards, Chicago Reporter; WTTW, etc. Arrange for photographers, Columbia College video taping, press release, press conference, posters, announcements, publicity with local newspapers, press. Arrange for City Council/Mayor and Illinois Legislature/Governor to proclaim October 6 2005 Land Mine Awareness Day.
