Night of a Thousand Dinners

“We must eliminate land mines once and for all. We must ban their use. We must ban their production. We must destroy those that are stockpiled.”
-Boutros Boutros-Ghali

What is Adopt-A-Minefield?

Adopt-A-Minefield is an international grassroots effort to save lives by raising funds to remove landmines, support landmine survivors and create awareness about the global landmine crisis. Adopt-A-Minefield Campaigns at the local level engage individuals, organizations, and businesses to raise funds for minefield clearance. These minefields, once cleared, are returned to productive use. The Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign at United Nations Association of Greater Chicago seeks to raise $30,000 in order to clear a minefield in one of the countries most afflicted by landmines. Every dollar raised will go toward mine clearance!

What is Night of 1000 Dinners?

Night of a Thousand Dinners (N1KD) is an international event that creates awareness of the global landmine crisis and raises much needed funds to support landmine removal and survivor assistance. N1KD began as an opportunity for people all over the world to come together on a single night, enjoy a meal and help solve the global landmine crisis. N1KD can include any kind of gathering – a cocktail party, barbeque, wine tasting, tea party, luncheon, potluck, etc. UNA-GC invites you to join tens of thousands of people around the world who will gather with friends, family, neighbors and colleagues to share a meal and make the world a safer place.
It’s Easy! Here’s how it works:

* Register your dinner with UNA-USA at www.1000dinners.com
* Download the N1KD information kit to help with your dinner, including landmine facts and recipe suggestions
* UNA-USA will send you a N1KD informational video to share with your guests.
* Invite friends, relatives, and neighbors to come to your home (or other local venue) for dinner. Instead of bringing wine, flowers or dessert, ask your guests to make a donation to the landmine cause. Donations made to Night of a Thousand Dinners are tax deductible.
* Host a gathering between November 4 and December 15 to share information with your guests about the terrible impact of landmines and the importance of ensuring their removal.
* Send the money collected at your dinner to United Nations Association of Greater Chicago.
* The money will be deposited in the Adopt-A-Minefield account immediately and we will be another step closer to our goal of saving lives!

This fun and easy activity provides an opportunity for involvement in the effort to improve the lives of people around the world. We hope you will agree to participate in N1KD and join us in clearing a path to a safer world!

* The N1KD Web site www.1000dinners.com offers tools to facilitate the success of your dinner. Hosts can use the site tools to download a host kit, send invitations, manage guest information, and try international recipes and party theme ideas.

As a registered host, you will receive a video about the landmine issue to show your guests and guarantee an engaging and memorable get-together.
